I would never have believed that turkeys purr, but when they get fresh grass, they make
the happiest noise! They are terribly funny, especially because they all do the same
thing, at the same time. Crowd think. Keep your fingers crossed that the foxes stay
away this year, and everyone makes it until November!
This is Comso, our Australian Cattle dog. Cosmo has endless energy, and makes
a mockery of our farm name. He is a HUGE hit at the farmer's market, and loves all
of the attention. At a whopping 36 pounds, he runs fearlessly at our cattle, but isn't
quite trained for herding work yet. Hamlet, our faithful old German Sheppard, puts
up with Comso's ankle biting and is happy to have a friend so that he is never home
alone.
Shylah and her calf. The Highlands are typically very attentive moms and will group
together to protect the young, if a predator gets in the pasture.
Cosmo makes sure that Justin is never lonely on the tractor.
In the middle is our newest dog - Chance. He is an Australian Working Kelpie - a sheep
herding dog. The breed is known for "backing" - when they need to get across the herd,
they will often jump up and run on the backs of the sheep. Chance hasn't tried this with the
cattle, yet...
A few day old chick - already starting to grow feathers!
